The "ParaFrap PhD South" programme was set up following a proposal from Labex ParaFrap to IRD and CIRAD to contribute to a joint doctoral programme directed towards the countries and students of the "South".
After a call for proposals issued to ParaFrap's partner research groups, 10 projects were submitted and then examined by a selection committee comprising 7 members from ParaFrap, IRD and CIRAD. The evaluation criteria were not only based on the scientific quality and originality of the project, but also on the robustness of the collaboration with the "South" partner, quality of the partners' works and potential contribution of the project to the "South". Each project had to have a partner in the "South".
In the end, seven projects were selected. The applicant students, all from "South" countries, were proposed by the project managers, and their applications were validated by the Selection Committee, on the basis of training, experience and suitability for the proposed project.
All students have started their PhD at the beginning of the 2017 academic year. They benefit from an 'ARTS'-type scholarship (IRD) and must spend half of their PhD period in France and the other half in the "South" country.
A first training workshop for all these students, entitled "ParaFrap Introductive Training Course in Molecular and Applied Parasitology", was held from 12 to 23 March 2018 in Montpellier. A second workshop, for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, was also held in Montpellier, from 25 July to 2 August 2019. A 3rd workshop is planned for the 3rd year of the PhD.
